I usually stay FAR away from zombie stories but this was actually a really solid historical AU. It felt real, and well thought out. I actually laughed a lot because Jane's voice is so funny. Don't get me wrong, there's plenty of grimdark to go around (*cough* zombies + Civil War era racism *cough*), but it was still intensely readable.
There were a few anachronisms but unlike a lot of historical fantasy, this feels period appropriate. The atmosphere is really great and the writing is quite snappy.

WOW. I usually hate zombie stories just cause they scare me a lot. But this one was ABSOLUTELY worth it. I loved our cast and hope

For me, the second part of this book was far better and more interesting and readable than the first. I feel like I only slogged through the first part because I spent money buying the book. The concept of the book and the rewriting of history could have been so much more exciting (zombies and the civil war...) and I was expecting so much more. The world building and scene setting in part one were just kind of boring. I will say that the authors note at the end was very powerful and something that if you read this book you should definitely not skip.

I really liked this book. I mean zombies in a very well written, historically accurate setting, count me in. Exciting to get to the sequel...
