Both are overly concerned about accuracy and precision. Might be it is the proof they are German.
Both measure the world. One by sitting at his desk, the other by travelling extensively.

Gauss is brilliant. He is a mathematician and is eager to use mathematics to solve problems from physics and astronomy. He always wants to understand the mechanics which are at work. Thinking is his passion.
His first wife sees the man he is. He destroys the potential of the people close to him. For example of his son Eugen, or the mathematicians Bessel and Bartels.

Gauss, born into the wrong century and with no ambition as it seems. His vision and imagination are impressive though and at a young age he realizes the limits of what he can contribute. Other, later generations, will be in the position to discover, measure and proof the ever existing mechanics. For his visionary ideas scientists would call him crazy. He can leave this to the future generation because someone will solve it and that is for sure.
In contrast to Gauss Humboldt did not see this for himself. Every single thought and idea is documented. He himself travelled to all those places and collected, measured and documented. Why not laying the foundation and leave most of the work to future generations?

Even though measuring the world is a dry subject, this story was not. It's a fictionalized account of two world-famous scientists, Humboldt and Gauss, meeting at a convention. Humboldt had traveled the world measuring and classifying everything; whereas Gauss, The Prince of Mathematics, never left his hometown until this "convention". Humboldt seemed almost robotic. He had no use for women; whereas Gauss was a letch. Both were arrogant, Gauss more so than Humboldt. I can't decide which one I liked less, yet I liked the book.

I read a review where someone said Humboldt was a repressed homosexual. I listened to this on MP3 and didn't get that feeling at all. Maybe actually reading it gives a different sense. Any comments?

My worst nightmare has come true: A book about math and physics.

I cried while reading. No, not 'cause I was sad. It was so boring that I yawned so often that the moisture that formed in my eyes slowly swelled out.

However, I could have cried 'cause the book was so terribly uninteresting to me.

lustig, schnell gelesen.
