Supremely enjoyable. I’m not fully up on my classics/scripture so some of the play Daniel does is difficult for me to engage with, but otherwise this work sings. I’ve been reading and listening to his work for awhile and for me this represents a highlight in the genre of memoir and cultural commentary regarding the queer and trans experience. It’s also funny and beautiful as hell.

I love Danny's voice. He's sharp and funny, and I loved every last second. For me, this book was similar to yet totally distinct from Glennon Doyle's Untamed or Michelle Obama's Becoming. This book is thoughtful, laugh-out-loud greatness that'd I'd recommend time and time again (especially the formerly religious or queer/trans people). I love the references, and I love the raw way Danny grapples with questions of gender and self. Being a fan of the Dear Prudence podcast, I listened to the audiobook and found it easier to get through than the book.
Smart and funny, but a lot of the references went right over my head.

This book sometimes made me feel like I was not nearly smart enough to be reading it, but it was more importantly an incisive look at how it feels to learn yourself over the entire course of your life.
i enjoyed it, overall, but mhmm this felt uneven -- some really good, funny essays, but i didn't care much for the literary canon interludes or the heavy bible stuff but also that's a personal thing because that's just not my frame of reference.

In a series of short essays and prose, Daniel Ortberg reflects on his journey of identity and his knowledge of literature, relationships, and religion. It is a very self-aware and beautifully written book, leveraging cultural references and experiences to bring the reader along for the journey. It is sad and sweet and when you're complete, you'll have walked miles in an interesting and clever person's shoes for a tour of the gains and losses you have in life.
