This story was the best! The plot, the characters and all the small town feels made me love every minute of this book.

Ellie is finally free from the claws of her father and ex fiancé. She is ready to live the life she always wanted and there is no better place for her to be than Sparrow Falls, the small and charming town where her older brother lives and in a way her adoptive family too, "The Colsons". For the very first time in her life she feels home and welcome specially by her neighboor next door that is no other than single father and town's sherif Trace Colson.

Trace is a single father sharing custody of Keely with his ex wife. He always needs to be in control of the situation, chaos is something he doesn't want or need. When Ellie moves next to door to him he knows he is in trouble not just because his daughter adores her but also because he can't deny the enormous attraction he has for her. While they are very different in some aspects of life they fit and balance each other so well.

When outside forces come into town and Ellie becomes the target of a stalker, Trace is there to protect her at all cost and the more they spend time together the less they want to be away from each other but Trace is willing to do anything to keep Ellie safe even if is pushing her away.

In a true Catherine Cowles book she will keep you guessing until the very end to find out who is the true villain in the story and like always for me is very shocking. I listened to the audiobook of this story and if you have the chance to get it I definitely recommend it because Jason Clarke and Desiree Ketchum did an amazing job bringing the main characters to live with all the emotions that made me fall in love with this story even more.

Growly hero
Quirky heroine
Suspenseful aspects

Chasing Shelter is admitedly the first I've read in this series but as interconnected standalones, you can just jump into these. There was a clear grumpy (Trace) sunshine (Ellie) approach to this story that was engaging. Ellie brought recent baggage of a difficult relationship and in some ways, she was on the run from the ending of that coupling. Trace was the serious, all-business, uniformed single dad who put fires out literally and figuratively.

The kid was cute but I didn't always vibe with the authenticity of the child's dialogue. The suspense elements were good on the past relationship and a little stretched on both the characters' parental pasts. I found the plot quite predictable but still engaging.

While Trace was supposed to be broody, I found his abrupt dialogue a bit jarring and I know from other authors I've read that I don't gel with cut down dialogue. For me, it emphasises alpha behaviour and doesn't help to really get to know a MMC. This could just be a subjective taste in dialogue on my count. Nevertheless, it did irk me at times.

Ellie made up for a lot with her sunshine personality but I would have liked to see their relationship trajectory slow down from insta to gradual.

Overall, a like but not a love.

Thank you to Evermore for the finished copy.
