I wanted to love this so bad - the cover is gorgeous, the synopsis was catching, I love dystopian genre, and LGBTQ+, what could go wrong? Unfortunately, a lot. I didn’t love it like I was hoping.

I feel like we were supposed to wrapped up in this close knit friendship and this pining between friends as well, but none of it was that believable. It seemed maybe Hetty was just obsessed with Byatt without giving us any reason to believe they were as close as she said or Byatt was amazing like she wanted us to believe. Then her “relationship” with Reese also felt like it lacked depth, like they seemed to have strong feelings for each other but no reasons to back it up.

The first half of the book was a bit boring and then it finally started to pick up and I was getting really excited, even the bit of twists about certain characters were exciting. I was thinking wow maybe this will turn out amazing, but wait? There’s barely any pages left.

There was barely any pages left because we got no closure. I’m usually one who is a fan of open ambiguous endings, but I feel like that isn’t what happened here. It just felt like she forgot to finish it.

This book was very adventurous and mysterious. The storyline is good however it kind of fell short towards the end. Its the type of survival/adventure book that has action and twists and scenes that keep increasing your curiosity and has you at the edge of your seat but it just drops and slightly pushes you back towards the end. A fun book with a simple ending, but I would recommend if you love action and a good eerie thriller.

I could've had a young adult, sapphic body horror story set on a quarantined island but all I got was a vaguely described parasite and an open ending.
