was this a well-written book? yes. do i love this author? yes. is that the only reason why i finished the book? also kinda yes.
i was so excited for this book because i loooooved fysa, however, this just so did not do it for me :(
i don’t know what i felt about the characters, but i hated the selfish lens that everyone seemed to (in my opinion unfairly) view katee/kathleen in. her best friend was awful at times and the main guy, although cute and sweet in the flashbacks, was TERRIBLE to her in a time of confusion and need. maybe i was just more upset about how her situation was and the media in the book, but i just couldn’t do it man.

This was very cute. I think the writing could’ve been stronger, but a book about teen pop stars and musicals with a Jewish main character is so far up my alley that it worked for me

This was a great second-chance romance novel. With multiple timelines that tell the beginning, middle, and end of Cal and Kathleen's love journey, Sussman makes their love story believable. Each timeline has a unique tone that fits with Kathleen's age during that part of the story, which gives the reader the feeling of getting to grow up with Kathleen. Set against the backdrops of drama camp, pop star fame, and the road to Broadway, I felt immersed in each stage of Kathleen's life. Admittedly, it took a while for me to sympathize with Kathleen, which was hard for me, but it was worth sticking it out. Kathleen and Cal are both flawed characters who made mistakes, but that just makes their second chance so much more worth it! And, as a fan of musicals, the Broadway backdrop was a lot of fun!

Much like with Funny You Should Ask, I don’t think this book will be for everyone, but I enjoyed it. I think stories about celebrity, especially about adults grappling with the fallout of their own young celebrity, are interesting and I always enjoy a caustic female lead.
This is not something I usually say about romcoms, but I wish the book was longer. I feel like we didn’t get to see enough of Kathleen and Cal in the current timeline to really believe in their relationship, and I also wanted more about Harriet and Kathleen’s friendship. Overall, another solid romcom from Sussman and I look forward to reading whatever she writes next!
