This book was okay. Not one I'll remember long like The Night Shift (I still think about it?!!). Too many characters and names and I couldn't keep them straight. Also parts seemed farfetched which bugged me. Overall, not a bad book but not one I overly loved.

I LOVED this one and could not put it down.
Fast paced, multiple POVs, and twists I did not see coming. I didn’t know how the multiple POVs were going to connect and when they did it was 👩‍🍳 💋.
The storyline kept me interested and engaged through out and the chapters were the perfect length.
You are definitely going to want to pick this thriller up!

Oooh, me like!  High school sweethearts Ryan and Ali take a drive to a lovers lane when Ryan is suddenly pulled from the car and Ali is abducted, never to be seen again. He has one small glimpse of the person and that he was missing a finger from both hands. But, despite his please he becomes the only suspect and this label forces him to change his name and try to rebuild his life.

Poppy is brand new to the local police department and is out on the case when the car Ali was taken in is found years later submerged in a lake. In it are the bodies of two men, but not Ali. What they do find is a letter that survived the waters with “if something happens to me written on the envelope”.

This had it all: mystery, dual narrations, dual timelines, interwoven stories. I really, really liked it!

Thanks to NetGalley for this ARC in exchange of an honest review.

Omg, I can't believe that Netgalley accepted my request for "if something happens to me". I'm so happy about it because I've been waiting for the book for a really long time and now I can read it in advance!!

It takes a while to get into the story and get familiar with the different POVs, but at about 30% it gets really exciting. I didn't want to put it down. You're always wondering how the three perspectives fit together.

I found the first half better than the second. However, I couldn't put it down. Towards the end it was like an action film.

The plot was okay. But it wasn't a "crazy" page turner. When it all came together, I found it exciting and well thought out, but it was a bit too much... a bit over the top.

Overall it was a very good thriller that I finished reading in a very short time. Exciting, good twists and turns and absolutely recommended!!

Thank you Macmillan Audio for the gifted copy. #MacAudio2024

This popcorn thriller was filled with buttery plot twists and salty antagonists. I enjoyed every minute of this. The way the author connected the three storylines, I didn't see it coming at all.

Ali is kidnapped. Everyone blames Ryan and thinks he killed her, leaving him with the aftermath. Shane is seeking revenge for his son's bullies. And Poppy is stuck in the middle of it all, coming back home from the military to become a deputy sheriff and putting the puzzle pieces together for all the storylines.

It was hard to keep up with all the POVs and storylines going on at first, but they eventually came together. As a reader, this is one of the thrillers where you have to pay attention to almost every detail for you to understand how everything fits. I did have an issue with the slight mention of police brutality. I really do not think that was handled tastefully considering all MC's were white, and we know that white people have privileges when it comes to the police that minorities do not. It also did not add to the story, so why on earth was it written? I don't know, but me mentioning this is not a deal-breaker for the book; it is constructive criticism, and for me to remember, if I see it again, I won't tolerate it.

Although the book had its flaws, I'd still recommend it for a quick, thrilling read. Alex is a great storyteller, and I want to check out more of his books.
