I tried to eat my literary spinach, but Naipaul's strengths don't agree with my tastes. He writes in the classic literary mold, trying to plumb the depths of human consciousness and socioeconomic culture of places and eras; he's certainly an astute observer of human nature, and succeeds in creating authority. But what he fails to achieve at the beginning of this novel--at least for this reader--is anything approaching a compelling plot.
