Doesn’t pass the Bechtel test - all the women are basically cardboard cut outs.
The first half feels like a retelling of the Lord of the Rings, then things get a little more original once the rift opens.
I think the Surani (sp?) society is structured unrealistically - in an empire that’s stood for millennia, this is somehow the first time one of the “great ones”/magicians has fundamentally disagreed with the ruling class and decided to do something about it?
An easy background read overall

I love the book, but was annoyed with the narrator.
While his normal in-character narrating voice is just fine (the kind of voice I associate with big, bearded, pipe-smoking old wizards), any time he tried to act out some strong emotion it sounded... constipated. And it's very much not fun listening to a young lady sobbing in the voice of a constipated middle-aged man.
And then there's all changing voices for minor characters (sometimes even in the middle of a sentence).
So yeah, not really in love with the narrator, but the books is still great fun, in writing and in audio :)

i remember starting to read this story when i was younger and now that i’ve finished it, i don’t think little me could have fathomed the journey that followed pug & tomas. the worlds that were built by feist felt both familiar and not. very fantastical - if GOT and earthsea had a little baby.
the story was long, like nearly ten years condensed into several hundred pages, and i wanted the ending to ask more than tell. because i know it was the first book in the rift war saga, i had expected the ending to make me want more of the world but the ending felt too much of an end instead of an intermission.i can’t fault them for receiving their happily ever after but the emotional whiplash left me a little confused. that might just be me tho lol
i really enjoyed the variety of the characters, how they grew and changed, and also how familiar they felt after reading of their lives. it really felt like the story was constantly evolving but at times the transitions were a little harsh. such is war, i guess?i’m glad that tomas and pug reunited in the end but i needed more from their reunion. they were literally two sides of the same coin. both fighting inner demons - one mentally battling a literal dragon lord and the other, war propaganda LOL, i jest. they both had a lot to overcome. feist built up their brotherhood from the beginning only to end it in a nice bow tied hug though? not what they deserved.
idk if i will keep reading the rest of the saga, only bc i really disliked the deus ex machina that was macros. honestly, don’t care about his beginning and middle and end 🤷 i would’ve rathered some other roundabout way the plot lines were fixed other than his meddling.
i hope pug and tomas are happy with their lives and their families, they deserve it.(can’t believe tomas ended up being aaron taylor johnson’d)
