F***ing loved this book. Though have to say it is at some points a bit slow, but I've enjoyed it nonetheless.
Feist is here to remind me that I do enjoy fantasy, and that I shouldn’t be so scared of doorstoppers when they provide room for memorable moments, fantastic scenes and brilliant writing.
It’s almost as if Feist rewards his readers for continuing the book as it progresses.
I definitely had a lot of time on my hands, which allowed me to finish this in an insanely fast amount of time. For those about to pick up, do not let the size scare you off. It is an exciting, magical, and adventurous read.

Honestly a very boring book with a lot of uninteresting characters. There were a few glimpses of interesting interactions or developments but they were few and far between.
The ending of the book didn’t leave any open ends and it makes no sense that there are more books in the series.

Moderate: Incest, Slavery, War
“ ‘That you have lived as you have lived for centuries is no license for this cruelty. All here are now judged, and all are found wanting.’ „
Damn you, Feist. Damn you.
This book took me a whole year to read and I’m glad it did because it meant getting to live in this world with these characters for such a long time. This story spans an entire decade, in which we get to see our protagonists grow from innocent children, terrified by the prospect of war, to legendary warriors and master magicians. I cared so deeply about each and every one of them — those from both Midkemia and Kelewan — and I was so immersed in their lives for an entire year of my own. I feel empty without this book as a constant companion.
“ There was nothing left to fear. He would endure or he wouldn’t. It didn’t matter now. „
And Pug and Tomas. I have never found myself so completely invested in a friendship between two young boys and the decade long mess they both found themselves thrust into. This story is as heartwarming as it is epic, and the story expands completely, as soon as we leave the comfort of Crydee, with new places and characters to become familiar with. But Pug and Tomas. They will continue to have my whole entire heart. I think this is the first time a book has made me cry happy tears, and after 800+ pages of literal torture, I think they were more than deserved.
And yet, somehow, whilst being the most intense fantasy I’ve read in a while, I found myself laughing at the absolute absurdity of some of the dialogue Feist writes for his characters. This doesn’t feel like it was written almost half a century ago, but I guess we don’t really change all that much.
“ Nogamu bowed his head. ‘I lose much face in my lord’s sight. May I have permission to kill myself?’ „
Funny dialogue aside, I love this book. A lot. These characters have quickly become so dear to me that, as much as I can’t wait to read Silverthorn and every other book after it, I dread to think of what fates await them. I love them all too much to watch them suffer any more than they already have. But when have I ever turned down a good cry?
And, of course, I’ll be needing more of Amos’ gorgeous lyricism: ‘Turn, you motherless bitch!’. Wouldn't have been the same without it.

Interesting to see the development of fantasy and one of the older examples of tropes we now see as genre staples.
The plot is enjoyable and follows a more winding path than might be expected. The narrative often holds the reader at a distance from the characters, particularly at the start of part 2, so it's less overtly emotional than much modern fantasy is.
Unfortunately, though somewhat expectedly, the female characters barely exist and when they do they serve more as accessories for the male characters than as characters in their own right. ParticularlyKatala .
