This book is fine. There is nothing I hate about it. There is nothing I love about it. I was kept engaged througout. It did not drag.
I was worried about the mix of sci-fi and magic. It didn't work for me in "The girl and the mountain" but it worked here.

One of the first ‘adult’ books I read. More digestible than Tolkien, fun characters, and a blending of concepts that I’d never come across before. A perennial favourite.
(Rating closer to a 1.5, rather than a 1)
I have mixed feelings about this book, I enjoyed parts of it - particularly how it ended, but this book really missed the mark for me. I'm no stranger to slow starting fantasy series so I persevered through all 841 pages but it fell really flat.
Some aspects felt so heavily inspired by LOTR that it was almost boring, reading about the very similar character, races, and histories.
This book feels oddly like a mix of classic fantasy and SI-FI, and It made for a pretty confusing plot, that I still don't fully understand. Similarly, I found the world building to be somewhat lacking.
There was a whole host of characters yet none of them were very well developed, making it difficult to like anyone in particular.
My favorite part of the book was definitely Fantus, who was super cute and I wish I could adopt.
Luckily I only paid $4 for this book from a charity shop, but I certainly won't be investing in the rest of the series unless I happen to find those just as cheap!
If you're after fantasy, pick up the Kingkiller Chronicles or A Song Of Ice and Fire instead.
