A fantastical tale of war between two nations across a rift in the fabric of the universe. At it's heart it is a tale of invasion from an eastern influenced and highly martial people. Told from both sides of the rift, this is a wonderful story where one is introduced to characters from the lowliest orphan boy and his best friend to the children of royalty. Experience the lives of these characters irrevocably change as Feist weaves his magic and creates a truly masterful fantasy epic. As strong a beginning to a fantasy series as you can get where the author introduces the reader to the Kingdom of the Isles and world of Midkemia.

A book that has been read multiple times with the sense of joy never diminishing. I already look forward to the next time that I read this book and reacquaint myself with Pug, Tomas, Arutha and Martin.

Can be read as a standalone should the reader so choose.

I'm generally not into fantasy - however, this novel isn't too bad.

Much nostalgia, reading this again. Still one of the better epic tales, one of my favourites (although, having just reread them, I’d say the Mara books are better written)

This was recommended to me by a friend, who said it was her favourite growing up and i guess if i was younger than maybe i could have liked it more though that is a big question mark.

I guess it was engaging enough for me to keep reading but i expected and wanted more. I wanted more depth and nuance to the characters and for a book set in a seemingly endless war, i found the action, suspense, and apprehension lacking.

I'll read Silverthorn, the next book in the series as i bought them as a box set but i doubt i'll read any more in this series

I read the first quarter and then skimmed quickly through the rest. Awful, SO many cliches and the writing style made me cringe.
After seeing so many positive reviews I'm just so disappointed.

Decent story but I found the writing style lacking. Also, 650+ pages before the book barely squeaked a pass on the Bechdel test.
Not saying I won’t read others in the series but I won’t be rushing to do so.

I was genuinely blown away by this book. One of the most enjoyable and gripping novels I have ever read. And I don't say that lightly.
Unforgettable characters, a great plot, and countless scenes which had my jumping up and down in excitement. Superb stuff.

I think this must be my 5th time I am reading this and I love it more each time.

This book is a truly great read. What a wonderful world to experience.
For those who like fantasy but don’t like heavy violence or graphic descriptions of gore, this book is for you.
