TW: bullying, cheating, student-teacher relationship, pedophile.

"I recite to myself the poem he once wrote for me many years ago, back when I was fifteen years old and he was my English teacher fresh out of college who swore to me I was his soulmate..."

This is me after reading the last chapter of this book:

Starting this with a very super uncomfortable feeling because of the student-teacher relationship. But it ends with a strike of banging twist. I can't wrap my head. WAIT A FUCKING MINUTE...

SPOILER AHEAD

SO ALL THIS TIME, JAY WAS HUDSON???? HOLY FUCKING SHIT.... SO ALL THIS TIME, EVE WAS NATHAN'S VICTIM TOO? FREAAAAAAAAAKKKKKKK.... I BEG YOUR FINEST PARDON???
Wait a minute... I need a breath.

Shoes, sex, murder attempts and teachers.
Brilliant how the author slowly leads you to a peak of actions where you think you know where it's going, but it's not...

This fell short for me … so many details brought in that didn’t compliment the plot but just made distractions for the reader … the shoe obsession? Didn’t get the point of that.

I don’t read Frieda McFadden for a well developed plot with complex characters. I read them to see if I can be surprised. And to her credit she does somehow manage it even when I think I’ve figured it out. The subject matter is quite dark so read TWs for that. I didn’t love this book, but I didn’t hate it either.
