Reading the preface you can tell how hard Doyle wanted the Sherlock Holmes novels to come to an end (this time definitely), and maybe it was necessary because sometimes if series of books go on for too long they lose their essence, but that doesn’t change the fact that reading this last book felt like a bittersweet goodbye. In this collection of cases we got back to having a bigger number of them, what it’s always welcomed. I’ve found the cases to be very diverse and original this time, with much unsuspected criminals. Also I’ve liked how Sherlock Holmes himself narrated instead of Watson (it was nice and interesting for a change but I still prefer John on the job) and how we got to see more of his, lest say, human side, and how he decided to expend his retirement. Like I’ve said in the beginning I’m sad there are no more Sherlock Holmes to read, but I comfort myself thinking that I can re-read them whenever I like (and I’m sure I will).

A mixed bag, some stories being more entertaining than others. Not the best collection of SH stories, but still worth reading.
Completed the last of the Sherlock Holmes books today. It's taken a while because I rationed them.

A lovely mixture of stories. As per usual, Conan Doyle’s flare and prose are lovely to experience, and truly do captivate my attention and provide a great deal of immersion in the world of Victorian England. As this is a collection of short stories, the quality of their narrative structures and intricacies vary, of course. However, I did greatly enjoy myself, despite some overarching trifles of mine. For example, I feel as if it is a consistent issue throughout the series, that Sherlock often solves the crimes with little development or lead-up. Thus, the series of short stories often struggles with providing a meaningful, impactful conclusion and with pacing issues. However, I digress, I love the series nonetheless.
What follows are my thoughts on the individual stories contained within, proceed at your own pleasure.
The Adventure of the Illustrious Client
- A lovely story with a great deal of drama and scandal. I quite enjoyed the villain.
The Adventure of the Blanched Soldier
- Personally did not enjoy much, due to its minimal overall intrigue and the minimal impact of its conclusion.
The Adventure of the Mazarin Stone
- Did not enjoy, similar issues to the last, but with greater precedence
- Incredibly boring solve and the villains were quite bullheaded.
The Adventure of the Three Gables
- Did enjoy the initial premise and the setup
- Racial stereotypes were not conducive to an enjoyable story.
The Adventure of the Sussex Vampire
- I was quite intrigued by the setup of the story and found the mystical element fascinating.
- The actual solve was quite fantastical and not very enjoyable.
The Adventure of the Three Garridebs
- My favourite story of the collection, has an incredibly original and fun premise and intrigue.
- Very lovely character moment for the relationship between Holmes and Watson.
- Lovely solve.
The Problem of Thor Bridge
- Enjoyed Sherlock’s interactions with the client.
- Fascinating, but dark solve. Quite enjoyable.
- Lovely premise.
The Adventure of the Creeping Man
- What? This premise is insane?
- Hilarity ensues. Ironically enjoyable.
- Initially fascinating, captivated by the strangeness of it all.
The Adventure of the Lion’s Mane
- Feel as if the story had very small stakes and a small conclusion, very middle-of-the-road story.
- Sherlock crushesa jellyfish with a boulder. I enjoyed that.
- Sherlock’s perspective provides some insight into his thought process, but is worse narrated.
The Adventure of the Veiled Lodger
- Lovely moment of Sherlock’s empathy.
- Short and sweet.
The Adventure of the Shoscombe Old Place
- Very dramatic and sensational designs by the suspects.
- Possibly discriminatory portrayals of people?
- Strange conclusion.
The Adventure of the Retired Colourman
- Watson investigation! Lovely change of pace.
- “What did you do with the bodies?” is such a lovely line.
- Fantastical, but nonetheless enjoyable methods employed by the perpetrator.
Overall, quite lovely and enjoyable, as per usual with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
