It was slow going at first but I really enjoyed this book. Loved the actual historical events that took place. It is fiction, characters are fiction but some of the things that took place in New England during that time period certainly effected the war as the author states in her notes at the end. There are certain things that I never really knew, like the Hooligan Navy. It may have been called something different but that actually doesn’t surprise me it was real as I am sure it helped the war effort. Really good book. I am glad I read it. Happy ending too for the characters.

The story centers around four women in a small New England town during WWII. Reading as a black out activity draws people together but they end up caring for and challenging each other. Each sees the world and the people around them a bit differently afterwards. It was also interesting to read some history around WWII activity along the coast of the United States and Coastal Picket Patrol, also known as the Hooligan Navy.
It was fun to see as in real book clubs, there was an effort to read and discuss all reader's different choices of genres, even the children's. A beautiful story of friendships and the power of books to impact us.

This book took me way longer to read than it should have. I started it before Christmas and never got back to it. A cozy/ bookish read. Takes a look at what the war looked like in 1942 New England. Local people had a big part albeit unbeknownst to most of the world.
Loved how the concept of books and a Bookclub kept the hope the alive for so many.

I was sucked into this story from minute one of the audiobook. Avis, taking over care of the library for her brother. Ginny, being forced to leave her home because of the government. Martina, having to uproot her children to protect them from her husband. And Louise, keeping her distance from everyone because she can’t let go of the past. I felt like I was a part of their book club. Watching the group grow and change, and how their friendships did also. It was a fantastically written story.
I really enjoyed this WW2 era story. The characters each bring a great element to the story and their stories intersect to make a lovely read. I loved the bookish theme to the story and the book club that they form to help save their library. There were also a few surprises in the story, one of which I thought was perfect. All in all, this was a pretty perfect read for me. The story was excellent, it was well paced and a great ending. I highly recommend this one!
