The protagonist's shameless cowardice and womanizing is the biggest draw of the novel, but still reads as a surprisingly-competent historical-thriller. The abundance of characters with similarly-Indian names may cause some trouble.

This books starts out at a wild gallop, but slows in the second half with a lot of descriptions of war and minimal Flashman. I enjoyed it, but I want to read about our dear Flashy and his knavery first, with historical accuracy a close second.

If this had been my first Flashman, it probably would have been my last. Fortunately I know better and will continue the series.

More of the usual silliness of Flashman, as well as lots of actual British imperial history embedded in the tales of cowardice, lust and drunkenness.

Yet another very well researched and written story about Flashman. Not, in my opinion, the most exiting one, but definitely worth the read!
