rip bukowski you would’ve loved The tortured poets departments except not because it was written by a woman and you don’t seem to value that
i now have beef with the one person who recommended me this book, not only was it incredibly misogynistic it was also BORING
at first the vulgarity is shocking but it soon becomes pathetic after 30 pages and disgusting after 50
the little handful of poems that i liked were, no surprise there, vastly the one not talking about fucking whores and pissing in public places
Also literally who said there was good prose in this book ?? simplistic in a dumb way with a morale overly obvious repeated 3000 times in the while book it was an appealing snoozefest
anyway bukowski hater for life 🫶

this man is misogynistic, pedophilic (there's a poetry about a bus girl that made me wanna throw this book in the bin), disgusting, creepy, lonely (for all the right reasons) and a grumpy woman hating alcoholic.
I MEAN WHYYY DO PEOPLE LOVE THIS GUY????????????????????????? i kept hoping it would get better, IT DID NOT
i just searched "whats so great about charles bukowski?" on google and the result was because of "raw, honest, and unapologetic writing style" great jerking off to a random woman (or a girl i think

I don't even like poetry, but damn.

I don't even know where to start.

- Pedophilia. He writes about j***ing to a little girl. The stanza is very clear and there is no other interpretation. He says it outright. And it's disgusting. This is followed by a whole poem about him peering at and sexualizing 13 year old school girls, which again is not up for interpretation because he makes it very clear that is what is happening.

- The way he writes about women is sexist. They are often whittled down to sex objects and are often portrayed as very emotional and out of control. Women are painted in a negative light when taken out of a sexual context.

- Racism is also present in this collection, particularly towards Asian people.

- The collection somehow gets more sexist and racist as it progresses.

I had to DNF (not finish) this collection. I almost never not finish a book, but I could not stomach the pedophilia, racism, and sexism. The poet is disgusting. At this point in his life, he is a bitter, old, disgusting man and that is clearly reflected in his work.

I will not be adding this to my reads for the year. And this is the last I will ever speak of this collection. Save yourself the trouble and the time, and read other poets!

Reading this book in 36 hours was rather a strange experience. At first I loved it. I bookmarked so many of the initial poems. But as I kept going I was kind of disappointed at how monotonous the poems became. At points I was disgusted with the obscenity and misogyny of some of the poems.
I did really like some of the poems, but not the collection as a whole. I'd say if it's the first time you finally lay your hands on a Bukowski poetry collection, go for it. But I'm sure I've had enough of his poetry for the near future.

I probably didn't get it. But, my god, I really hate men.

Interesting poetry. Bukowski is his own genre. My favorite poems were Old Snaggletooth and GOD AND ANGELS in all caps. Those two in themselves earn the 4 or even 5 stars. But Bukowski is a pervert. There is a poem about him watching a teenage girl at a bus stop and getting off. He knows he is, I don't know if that makes it better or worse.
