challenging dark medium-paced

There are maybe three or four good poems, the rest are honestly detestable.

there’s divinity in the pages if you’re willing to scour through the filth.

this has to be the worst thing i’ve read this year, maybe ever. and i’m angry about it.

trigger warnings for: aggressive heterosexuality, sexual assault, rape, incest, pedophilia

this is the biggest red flag. if someone tells you they admire bukowski or enjoy his writing, run in the opposite direction because they are up to some nefarious stuff. don’t trust them. and this includes mr harry styles who is even REFERENCED ON BUKOWSKI’S WIKIPEDIA PAGE.

i don’t even think i can verbalize how much this upset me. not only is the content just beyond disturbing, but the fact that this man is so beloved in the world of literature is so disheartening. this collection is over 300 pages and there is ONE poem that i liked that doesn’t pop up until page 137. and i don’t even like it! it’s about his car being stolen! who cares! it is only appealing because it’s not about objectifying women or getting drunk and vomiting or jacking off while looking at underage girls on the street. like wtf!!!! how do people commend this man for his writing!!!!

meanwhile, people clown on rupi kaur and other “instagram poets” for writing easily accessible poetry (for a largely female audience) and claim that charles bukowski’s work is art. just say you’re a misogynist and go home. nothing about this man’s writing was profound or eloquent or insightful. he’s just a creepy old dude, and his self-awareness does nothing to absolve him of anything.

and the worst part is that i own another collection of his poetry. what a waste.

tl,dr; charles bukwoski has now officially joined the list of white man ghosts i would fist fight if he were ever to return in corporeal form.

Putting aside his never-ending misogyny, his poems are incredibly mediocre. I cannot fathom why anyone would call themselves a fan.

my expectations were too high i think, kind of just poem after poem about fucking women and hating them yet being "in love" with them. it's kind of difficult to sympathize with a sex addicted misogynist. this collection is melancholy hedonism. even so, i find *some* of these poems good. just not for me.

From the entire book I maybe liked 3 poems and not fully only parts. Maybe I shouldn’t have picked this one as my first bukowski book because I’m not sure I want to read anything his written again.

Also heavy perversion in the book. Which I don’t mind sexually endos, but when he speaks about fantasies about 13 little girls, and poems about him jacking off after seeing little girls waiting at the bus stop very explicit that’s where I draw the line sorry.
