”don’t undress my love
you might find a mannequin;
don’t undress the mannequin
you might find
my love.”
This is one of my first time reading Bukowski, reading his poetry for real and not in school books or on the Internet. I fell in love with his writing when i read Letter to Sofia and since then I always wanted to read one of his books. This author is controversial, he is human and this might scare a lot of people. We want bitter sweat love and romance but the reality sometimes doesn’t suit our dreams. Bukowski tells the world’s truth without being ashamed of it. He lets his poetry be the mirror of what he is and he embraces all the new generations, he tells them all something. Something unique that we barely know or understand.
”love dries up”
“nobody ever finds
the one.”
The truth is love is a dog from hell. Everyone that believe in real love or in the novels books is a deluded person. It’s rear to find real love in this world. The one that we read about, the one that keep us awake at night, the one that everyone except us find. It’s hard but Bukowski knows it and he tells it in the most brutal and honest way possible. I feel in love of the way he explains concepts, of the way simple words can mean so much in his poetry.
He is something and I want to discover all the things he is.

“The clouds will cloud.” “There is a loneliness in this world so great that you can see it in the slow movement of the hands of a clock.” “I know that some night in some bedroom soon my fingers will right through soft clean hair.”
“And I won’t forget you. I’ll send postcards and snapshots, and the finished sonnet.”

This book was definitely different than what I normally read. I understood it best when I myself was drunk in my underwear in my bed reading it while dissatisfied with my love life, HA. Grotesque, vulgar, insulting book, definitely one I'll keep going back to to digest what in the world Bukowski meant. Cheers to you man.
This book just proved to me that poetry is not my thing, I read this as part of my bookclub. This book didn't give me anything. Now I know that Bukowski's stuff can be pretty dark and not all poetry is but this book just put the nail in the coffin for me. I know it's not a bad book I just didn't like it.
what the actual fuck?? eum?? i wish i hadn’t read this. i can’t think of any redeemable quality.
It's not a bad book at all. Mr. Bukowski is really a legend, and I can see that in every word he wrote. But, at the same time, I feel like I shouldn't give him all the stars because he made me uncomfortable when it came to some quotes. He had some thoughts and actions when it came to younger girls that made me shiver. I understand it's from 1977, and things were very different, but I could NOT deal with him saying he jerked off thinking about 13 year old girls.
Even with the uncomfortable moments, I do believe it's an okay book.

I knew this man was a pervert but didn’t expect it to be that present in his writing. It’s weird after every 15 or so “poems” about cum and women’s asses there’s a lil buried gem of real amazing poetry- it’s a shame I had to read endure his horny monkey brain thoughts to find them.
we are afraid.
our educational system tells us
that we can all be
big-ass winners.
it hasn't told us
about the gutters
or the suicides.
or the terror of one person
aching in one place
alone
untouched
unspoken to
watering a plant.
