I know a lot of people really loved the first book in this trilogy, Scythe, but Thunderhead is my favorite book so far. While the Thunderhead is simply a thing in the first book, here, it's a character, and its interludes paint a clear picture of this AI, how it thinks, it's morals and how those things shape how it interacts with the human world. There are multiple perspectives in this book, including the Thunderhead, and those differing perspectives help propel the novel along in a way that for me wasn't present in Scythe. There is also a central mystery, really a conflict here about what it really means to be a scythe and what moral code this body of individuals should hold. I found this incredibly interesting, and because of it, the reader is drawn farther into the scythdom, and thus get to see the beginning of the breakdown of the world as humans know it. These are very interesting topics that not many YA novels are confronting in such an open way, and I love that about this novel as an adult reader. This book was so gripping in fact, that I finished it in a couple of days. I highly recommend picking up this book if you loved the post-modern world we enter in Scythe and I'm excited to see what the conclusion of this trilogy means for the scythes and their world.
