Good story, but a few things bothered me.
Stephanie never stands up for herself. Even over stupid things, she just takes whatever it is. Which makes it pretty unbelievable when she tells Sven to kiss her. The girl couldn't even deny it a little bit when she's accused of cheating - even though if they'd just have compared the handwriting on the paper to both girls' papers, it probably would have been really easy to figure out - but suddenly she has the nerve to demand that Sven (who has just told her that he loves someone else) kiss her, when she's never even done so much as held a guy's hand before? . Not buying that.
It also bugged me the way Christians are portrayed. I'm not sure if it's because the author just doesn't really understand Christianity, or if the Swedish Pentecostal church believed and taught this way at this time, but it's not a very accurate view of Christianity. Anyone who cares to actually read the Bible knows that the Pharisaical idea of forcing everyone to adhere to your prescribed rules or else is not remotely Biblical. There is no excommunication from the church. Not if you're following the Bible.
So the idea that the church was ready to excommunicate Stephanie for going to a movie was pretty stupid. Of course, there are those cult type churches out there. It's just not a good representation of actual Christianity. Also, no church that I know of simply assumes that you're "redeemed" because you shed a tear or two while listening to a hymn. There has to at least be some sort of declaration. Particularly if a person is coming out of something like Judaism.
But ah well. I'm still curious to find out where the story is going and whether the girls' parents make it out.

A bittersweet second book in what appears to be a trilogy. I can't wait to read the next one to see just what happens.
