A POCKETFUL OF LODESTONES by Elizabeth Crowens
The Time Travel Professor Book 2

Music professor John Patrick Scott happens to be visiting his hometown in Scotland when World War I breaks out. Unable to return to his life in Germany he decides to enlist. Life as the lowest soldier, with a commanding officer who has it in for him, is not what the concert pianist had imagined. In fact it's nothing like his good friend Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's exploits in the Boer War. Spending his days digging latrines and burying the dead, Scott spends his time on night watch continuing his psychical experiments. Going back in time, visiting past lives, he tries to discover just why his sergeant hates him so much. He also tries to use his special abilities to help his platoon, even if it's only telling them stories from his special red book. Will his abilities help him survive the war, or merely showcase just how different he is from his fellow soldiers?

Fraught with the horrors of war, this second book in the Time Travel Professor series continues to tell the story of pianist and music professor John Patrick Scott. There are not only vivid descriptions from the front lines of World War 1, but from the various past lives that Scott visits as well. Although the war separates Sir Arthur Conan Doyle from Scott while Scott is on the front lines, we continue to follow Doyle's life as well, as well as the past lives they shared together.

There are a lot of fascinating details and I like how Scott is able to recognize people with whom he's currently involved in his various time travels. However, there are too many unanswered questions, anecdotes seemingly pulled from thin air, and too many paths taken.

A POCKETFUL OF LODESTONES is an interesting but rambling tale that doesn't end; it just stops. There is no conclusion, and I must assume there will be a third book. Although Scott is learning about his past lives, and some of the reasons for current friendships and dislike by others, he doesn't seem to be growing.
