I didn't read the Emily as a child so my perspective is different. I like Emily but she will never replace Anne of Green Gables whom I have loved for many years.

Emily of New Moon is very similar to Anne of Green Gables- an orphan goes to live on a small farm on Prince Edward Island. Like Anne, Emily is precocious, talented and stubborn, she clashes with a fiery older woman. Anne and Emily have similar friends, schoolhouse troubles and strong feelings. Emily is subtler than Anne, she is quieter and more observant. She is very spiritual and spends a lot of tie thinking about what god is, the spirits of nature and connection to the land.
I never felt invested or particular interested in Anne of Green Gables but recently I read L.M Montgomery's adult novel The Blue Castle and loved it so much I thought I would try some more of her writing. Emily is more my style, someone described Anne as ADHD and Emily as Autism and there may be something to that. Emily of New Moon is a more restrained style, with some more sophisticated ideas.
Because this book was first published in 1923, some of it is really dated. The use of the word queer and pussy would make any adolescent reader crack up. The way adults constantly scrutinise and comment on Emily's looks is revolting and creepy, I hope this wouldn't happen in 2025.
I love the way L.M Montgomery writes about place. The way she weaves nature and seasons into her writing is really beautiful. These books make me want to spend more time outdoors.

The charm that those familiar with Montgomery's Green Gables adore is back in a similarly unique protagonist and small sleepy town. In very different family conditions, and possibly a more determined than headstrong personality than the more infamous Anne with an E, Emily is enchanted with life. Writing is in her blood and through it stem her adventures, mark her confessions and fears, and occasionally cause a bit of a problem themselves.
That said the style is very similar to Montgomery's other focal young lady which for better or worse can make the two a little interchangeable. But as personally I approach these books looking more for the vibes than a grand tale that doesn't effect the experience. I would say that possibly because of the lead character's ambitions I was caught more frequently with beautiful phrases that I quite admired.
An enjoyable frolic not without its historical perspectives and character growth.

Voi mikä ihana <3 Tällaista kirjaa olen etsinyt. :-) Ei varmaan koskaan ole ollut kirjaa, jonka kanssa olisi ensimmäiseltä sivulta asti muodostunut tällainen tyyni ystävyys.
