Un romanzo di formazione frammentario, d'ispirazione autobiografica, incentrato sulla storia vissuta da Marguerite ragazzina (un po' je, un po' elle) con un ricco uomo cinese, molto più grande di lei, nell'allora Indocina francese. Al racconto della loro passione si intrecciano i ricordi dolorosi di una famiglia profondamente disfunzionale, tra una madre preda di una strana follia malinconica, un fratello narcisista e violento e uno debole e infelice. La prosa di Duras cambia forma e misura, da lenta e ondivaga ad asciutta, lancinante, in un unico respiro che tiene incollati alle pagine.

"Je vois bien que tout est là. Tout est là et rien n'est encore joué, je le vois dans les yeux, tout est déjà dans les yeux. Je veux écrire. Déjà je l'ai dit à ma mère: ce que je veux c'est çà, écrire".

"D'abord il y a la douleur. Et puis après cette douleur est prise à son tour, elle est changée, lentement arrachée, emportée vers la jouissance, embrassée à elle. La mer, sans forme, simplement incomparable".

"Des nuits, je me souviens. Le bleu était plus loin que le ciel, il était derrière toutes les épaisseurs, il recouvrait le fond du monde. Le ciel, pour moi, c'était cette traînée de pure brillance qui traverse le bleu, cette fusion froide au-délà de toute couleur".
