Stream of consciousness, constant point of view flips, and no structural organization were not solid stylistic choices for this book. Oh, and it was pretty gross overall.

writing itself was beautiful but the format of the book was so aggravating to read for me. interesting portrait of a woman but pacing was also odd.

beautiful. not at all what I expected. not the story of an affair but of the girl within it and her memories of / thinking through her family life and inner life before, around, and after the affair. the man of the affair so often mentioned in the first breath of descriptions of the book doesn’t appear until 25-30 pages in & is hardly the most significant character.

don’t read it for a love story, even a dark love story. read it for the voice of the teenage girl coming to terms with herself as a person in French Indochina and the woman years later coming to terms with what that part of her life still means.

"There's a storm blowing inside the water. A wind raging."

This book is more poetry than novel and good poetry at that. Lovely.
