“We’re united in a fundamental shame at having to live.”

“I’ve never written, though I thought I wrote, never loved, though I thought I loved, never done anything but wait outside the closed door.”

“It’s while it’s being lived that life is immortal, while it’s still alive.”

“My memory of men is never lit up and illuminated like my memory of women.”

The writing was beautiful but the story went completely over my head. Felt like she was just writing pretty words to write pretty words.

Impossibly beautiful, poignant writing. Just sublime. The story was not the most exciting (which is why I give it 4 stars instead of 5), but it was told skillfully through metaphors and abstractions (in which I admittedly got lost). The overall tone of the book is bleak, nostalgic and somewhat melancholy. I thoroughly enjoyed it, though I’m not sure I fully understood it, nor do I know how much there really is to understand here.

Stream of consciousness, constant point of view flips, and no structural organization were not solid stylistic choices for this book. Oh, and it was pretty gross overall.
