Dalcher's writing strikes a chord no matter what she focuses on. In this, her third major work, Dalcher explores the prospect of an all female colony. What at first seems to be an oasis turns out to be as equally treacherous and duplicitous as the outside world.
The book follows Miranda Reynolds as she struggles to find a way for her and her daughter to survive. The modern world has descended into chaos and there seems to be no other options for survival other than to ask for "sanctuary" at the Femlandia colony. Miranda has her own reasons for wanting to avoid the colony at all costs but she sets aside her reservations for the sake of her daughter Emma. As a woman who was used to all that her former privileged lifestyle provided her, Miranda cannot find herself able to submit to the rules of the colony. While her daughter seems to "drink the Kool Aid" and ultimately turns away from her, Miranda delves deeper into the darkness and discovers the secrets that her longtime rival Jen has fought to keep hidden.
An intriguing storyline that provides fodder for plenty of discussions in book clubs. Fascinating read!

This is the first Christina Dalcher book I’ve read and I’ll definitely be reading more! The book is set in the near future in a Great Depression / apocalyptic setting, and I couldn’t stop reading. There were many shocking twists throughout the book and I loved how it flicked between characters and timelines!

Just wow! What a book. (I listened to the audio book which I thought was read brilliantly by Brittany Pressley and Cassandra Morris
Firstly some content warnings for child sexual assault, murder, violence, child loss, child neglect, transphobia.
This is a very challenging subject/read and it feels weird to say I loved it because it is so dark and grim but it really made me think about both what would happen in the event of global economic collapse (which we are really only a hare's breath away from) and also the ethical and moral dilemmas both that and somewhere like Femlandia would throw up.
I have heard some people say this book is anti feminism but I don't agree. I think it is anti extremism. It is after all extreme feminist who are the most anti trans people I know, just as it is extreme feminism that lurches into misandry which is essentially what this book confronts us with.
This book is not a light read. If you are looking for women overcoming adversity this is only partly that. It is gritty, dark and some parts of it make for very grim reading but wow can this author write.
This is my first Christina Dalcher novel but I am definitely going to read her other work and if it is anything like this then I think she will be definitely become an auto-buy author for me.
