So, I love the first book.
This one felt like a prolonged first act to a new phase of the story, not always in the best way. I also felt like some of the best characters were sidelined or not in it at all.
That said, I appreciated the ending and how it clearly sets up a new phase. The palace intrigue is wonderful as always. And its commentary on savior complexes still really works here, maybe even better than the first book.

YES. just yes. satisfying and heartwrenching all at once. herbert's vision finally made clear to those of us who couldn't really get it while reading the original. my second read was so much more satisfying than the first; previously, i'd probably give this a 4.

Here, have strong women characters, except they are all controlled by that one dude and they appear to be unable to control their emotions.
Here, have a ton of world building in book one, except that most of it doesn't continue in the next book.
Here, have a godlike main character, except he is annoying, and we don't really know why you should even like him.
Here, have a sexualized 16 years old character, because she's a girl and it's the 70s ... I guess ?!
I'm so glad to be done with this book. Hopefully, like I was told, Dune #3 is a bit better...
I was going to give 1 star, but the last few chapters weren't that bad.

Reason is the first victim of strong emotion," Scytale murmured.

I just loved this so much more than the original Dune. It shocked me because this one is almost universally listed as the worst Dune book.

I feel like the true themes of the first book only become clear in Messiah and the way it wraps those themes around the personal tragedy of Paul is amazing. I finished this yesterday and I haven’t stopped thinking about it since. I feel like I get the hype around Dune now and I can’t wait to read more.
