Kind of a bummer because I enjoyed Dune a lot. This one focuses on bringing some darker aspects to the saga, but the pace is so slow for such a short book that I couldn't be as into it as I was with the first book. I think the ending saved it for me, so I'll continue to read but gah this book could've been an email.

While not the strongest installment in the Dune series, Messiah does a lot to further develop Paul’s character as he lives with the consequences of his actions from the first book.  It’s poetic to watch this all-powerful man walk to his own damnation, on a path that he laid himself.  Part of me wonders if this was intended to be the finale of the series, with how tightly it wraps everything up.
It’s always fun talking to my friends about this one since the opinions vary wildly, especially when it comes to Paul and his behavior.  Is he a tragic hero(?) fallen victim to an inescapable fate, or an entitled tyrant who uses fate to escape responsibility?  Herbert clearly implies one over the other, but  that can be telling in and of itself.

Whole lot of politics.
Feels like an intermission to hopefully Set up the Next book.
1st one was better, you could see it as a Stand alone book.
As always dune is cool but exhausting to read.

Here, have strong women characters, except they are all controlled by that one dude and they appear to be unable to control their emotions.
Here, have a ton of world building in book one, except that most of it doesn't continue in the next book.
Here, have a godlike main character, except he is annoying, and we don't really know why you should even like him.
Here, have a sexualized 16 years old character, because she's a girl and it's the 70s ... I guess ?!
I'm so glad to be done with this book. Hopefully, like I was told, Dune #3 is a bit better...
I was going to give 1 star, but the last few chapters weren't that bad.

Even though I really liked the first book I didn't like this one much. It was good don't get me wrong, an interesting read but I wouldn't read it again probably. It was also tragic and quite depressing. I feel hopeless now, thanks. Overall
I liked that Duncan returned and the bits between him and Alia feel like weird fan fiction not gonna lie. Paul's death was quite horrific and the children being born like Alia (adult-babies) is weird and I hoped that it wouldn't happen in this book but I guess not...
After I get over the hopelessness I might read the third one.
