When reading this book you need to look out for the small jokes woven into the story because they are hysterical but easy to miss. The type of humor used is a dark dry satirical humor and the author perfected this type of humor. For example the illiterate university chairman and the shop sign that suggests oysters as a substitute for omelets are fun jokes that are sprinkled into the story. I also though the characters were flawed yet fun to follow their story. So overall I found this book to be a fun treasure that I was glad I found. If you liked the type of humor that I described this book need to be added to you to read list.

Perhaps the low score comes from the high expectations I had for this book. Perhaps the translation was off. Perhaps I missed all the Russian references so couldn't see the social commentary. Whatever the case, it was just so...jumpy? scattered? That could have worked for the crazy professor's part, but not for the entire book.
