I must admit I laughed out loud quite a few times, but I didn't love this as much as I thought I would. There were certainly a number of cases that Greg got on my nerves. Still, though, I can see why my kids enjoy this series.

Greg keeps a journal of middle school: Humorous take on very real middle school issues-friendship, being popular, taking the easy way out, lunch, bullies, family, discovering who you are. Cartoons and texts work together to create meaning.
Despite being set in middle school and given a 950 Lexile I think it is an appropriate read for 4-6th grades and struggling readers in higher grades. The vocabulary and subject matter is not challenging for higher readers, though they may enjoy it.

I liked it ok--it had a few funny parts but he really was a little bit of a mean kid a lot of the time. I read the Diary of a Wimpy Kid The Ugly Truth a while back and liked it better than this one.

You can't help but feel sorry for this middle kid in middle school. It's like he can never catch a break.

My eight year old son has really gotten into this series this school year. I decided to read them too so I could see what all the fuss was about. I'm glad I did because, although Greg is a hilarious character to my son, he's not exactly a good role model. He's very self-centered (what middle schooler isn't?) and not very nice to his friend Rowley. My son and I have been talking about what Greg does that we like and what we would do differently from Greg. It's been fun because my son gets so excited about these books - he loves to talk about them.

Greg's parents are clueless and out of touch. I think reading about them has made my son appreciate me! For example, Greg's mom makes him try out for the school play - my son wanted to make sure that I would never make him do something like that if he didn't want to.

This book is a very easy read even for an elementary school kid. There are a lot of cartoons - it only took me about an hour to read and didn't take my son much longer. It is funny and sometimes gross but not inappropriate. I think these books would be especially good if you have a boy who is a reluctant reader - the drawings make it extra fun.
