This book is so eye-opening. I learned a lot about the Vietnam War and Vietnam in general. The book is constant tension and tragedy; You see on the ground how people were affected by the events of the war. It’s definitely not for everyone, it’s very dense and at times it drags, and the writing can be a bit stilted, but if you can sit down and allow yourself to feel the emotions of the Tram family, it’s very much worth it

One of my favourite historical fiction reads of 2021 thus far. I learnt so much about the history of Vietnam and impacts of war and famine. Very moving and definately pulls at the heart strings. It follows the life of a family through 3 generations, with the focus mainly centred around 3 women.

I wanted to tell my uncle not to blame himself but feared I'd interrupt his thoughts. Perhaps he had to untangle his feelings on his own, by talking out loud, so that he could understand how it was to be alive, and to be dead at the same time.

“The Mountains Sing” is a beautiful novel about the hardships of Vietnam’s recent history. It tells a story of a Vietnamese family, its members - broken by wars in their country one way or another - and those who surrounded them. It is a story about  love, pain, humanity, trauma and hope.
