For better and for worse, this book felt like a Vietnamese version of what Nino Haratischvili's The Eighth Life did for Georgia/the Soviet Union. Both books are absorbing human stories, and provide interesting insights into their respective country's culture and history. But both are also marred by over-the-top, melodramatic sentimentality, and simplistic anti-communist caricatures. Not for me, unfortunately, though other readers may enjoy.
