This was incredible. But very heavy as it follows one families struggle in Vietnam during the Communist reform and the Vietnam war. For me this felt like a memoir and not so much a work of fiction.

A stunningly beautiful account of the Vietnam war, focusing on themes of hope, togetherness and family.

The characters are nuanced interesting people. And they have been written with a careful light touch, where even the ‘villains’ are treated with compassion and understanding. An incredibly interesting read.
