I'm just now reading the Bartimaeus trilogy because I never got around to it as a kid. I was worried that it would be less enjoyable to read as an adult, but it's still fun and engaging. You can't go wrong with sarcastic demons. (Also, possibly the most Slytherin thing I've ever read.)
I think one of the reasons I didn't read these as a kid was because I thought they were going to be dark and gritty or something. I don't know why, it was just a random assumption from looking at the spines, but for some reason I thought these books would be Super Serious and that I'd have to wait to be in a Properly Serious Mood to read them. Couldn't have been more wrong...

This has a pretty good description of the general corruption and malfeasance of the ruling class, they just happen to be wizards. A young boy strong of will and ready to learn summons a demon to steal from his enemies only to have that petty act save the ruling dynasty.
I've read this book before, but I'm reading it again three years later so that I can be entertained again by one of my favorite djinnis. :D
Quite funny and sophisticated for a YA book. I didn't think it was that much like HP but HP is a lot like many other books so whatever. Bartimaeus the character is amusing and the tone reminded me of the Flashman books rather but without the sex. Looking forward to the rest of the trilogy. I might have given it 4 stars but for the lack of strong young female characters, except for tantalizing glimpses of the mysterious Kate Kitty, who may or may not show up later.
Oh my god. I read this book ages (I mean ages, like when it came out) ago and I remember absolutely loving it. Rereading it multiple times. You know, that sort of thing.
A lot of times books like that disappoint me when I read them again. That's not a bad thing, that means that I read them during the right time of my life. Not, however, this one.
I absolutely love this book. There were so many things that I vividly remembered, it seemed as if I read this book only yesterday. At the same time, I have absolutely no idea what will happen in the next books. It's perfect!
This book has everything - a good plot, interesting characters, character development, witty dialogue, fantastic worldbuilding - I could keep going, but this would be endless. If you're into fantasy, definitely pick up this book. It's really, really worth it.

This book was recommended for me by several people i know. I don't know what i initially had thought this book was about but it was very far from that. However the first book of the Bartimaeus triology is a good book. I love love love Bartimaeus. He is so diabolical, witty and selfabsorbed.
He is what makes this book so great. I'm saying this because i don't really care much for the other main charachter Nathaniel. He is irritating and you just want to give him a good beating.
I'm glad i finally got around to reading this book and i'm looking forward to reading the sequel.

I took up this book because Patrick Rothfuss had mentioned Bartimaeus as an unusual and amusing narrator. However, I don't consider Bartimaeus' remarks half as clever as he finds them himself. The world that Jonathan Stroud created is filled with conceited, boring characters and the protagonists are no different. The plot had failed to arouse my attention more than a third into the book, and the coldness and envy amongst magicians as well as amongst the magical beings they call upon led me to seek out other, more appealing literary worlds.
[Judith's review describes the book quite well.]

Read for the Favorite Book Swap on Tumblr. Interesting choice, giving us first-person narration from a cranky demon, instead of the more usual POV of a human magician. I was surprised by the ending: not the obvious sequel setup I was expecting. I did not grow particularly attached to either of the main characters, but the magician's motivation was believable enough, for a 12-year-old character.
brilliant. I read this via audiobook (the reader's voice definitely added to the story, though I know I'm going to have to reread it to catch the nuances of the story especially the footnotes. the characters flaws and virtues were real in such a way that you were tempted to forget their flaws for their virtues but could not. beautifully written, and refreshingly does not write about stalwart characters who never do the wrong thing and does what is right purely because it is write regardless of the fact that they had no one to teach them to behave so.
