Sancho Panza, squire and foil character of Don Quixote, MADE this book. His humor and wits throughout the book kept me reading. Don Quixote, self proclaimed knight-errant, is obsessed with the books of chivalry. He is a madman who truly believes, and behaves as if he is a real knight.
I enjoyed this novel, but it was very long. Recommend the audiobook.

I spent six months of my life slowly reading this. In some stretches, it was the dullest, driest, meandering piece I’ve ever laid eyes on. In others, it was magnificently funny, inspiring, and memorable. Quixote and Sancho are such fantastic characters that, naturally, the novel is at its weakest when the focus veers away from them. There are so many side-tracks, which Cervantes always identifies as little delightful interludes, but I didn’t like a single one. Whenever it IS about the goofy (and occasionally dangerous) implications of an obsession with fiction, it is unbeatable. This all boils down to a solid 3.5.

J'ose pas trop donner mon avis sur cette lecture... Je l'ai finie il y a trois jours, et après un début prometteur, je me suis lassé jusqu'à être déçu. La plume est pourtant très soignée, amusante, fluide à lire, mais petit à petit le sublime, le poétique m'est apparu de plus en plus grotesque. J'ai eu l'impression d'assister à un interminable diner de con. Interminable parce que chaque fois que DonQui se prend le mur de la réalité, il trouve une âme assez perverse pour le faire remonter sur scène pour s'amuser de sa folie et l'humilier toujours plus. Même la fin est frustrante. Je l'ai vécue comme un reniement, une désertion... C'est vrai qu'il y a un tas d'histoires qui valent peut-être le détour entre chaque aventure donquichotesque, mais ça n'enlève rien à ma déception. Est-ce que j'ai le droit de mettre deux étoiles à un livre aussi culte...

I definitely appreciate what the book did for books in general. My biggest complaint is that it's a bit too long and I zoned out often in the second part. Otherwise, much of it elicited a soft chuckle from me, so it wasn't terrible.

This has taken me a while to read but man. This book is more modern and I'm not sure if that is the writer or the translator but there are a lot of situations that I have seen in modern books, cinema, etc., and that just shows how important this work is.
