I hadn't listened to any historicals in a while and this was a great foray back into those waters. Tessa Dare never disappoints. This pair was... well, they were delightful. This poor man just did not understand it was too late by the time it started. He really thought he could avoid the inevitable. Bless.
I found this book absolutely delightful and at times laugh-out-loud funny. I was reading it while my husband was driving and couldn't resist reading him a few gems. Like this one about a broken statue:
He laughed. And historical romance is for sure not his thing.
I didn't realize this was a Spindle Cove novel when I bought it, and I have read two of the Spindle Cove series. One was meh for me (though it was long enough ago, I don't really remember). It isn't quite a SC novel, as it doesn't really take place there, but it does have a pretty limited setting, which I love (I think I'll add "house party trope" to one of my shelves). The spy element was very fun, as was observing the heroine's sharp insights.
This is definitely a Dare "hit" rather than "miss," as some of her work has been inconsistent for me.
Oh, Lord. She’d been holding the backside upside down, stubbornly trying to force it in place. All the while, the cupid’s stubby little penis pointed upward like a clock’s hand chiming midnight.

Thoroughly enjoyable but I swear to god I never want to read the word “nipple” ever again
This is my first Tessa Dare and I enjoyed it. Definitely similar to Julia Quinn. So it was kind of the same story line of many historicals being that they are being forced to wed and later fall in love with each other, but I liked in this case the woman was trying to stop it, even though the man was a marquess. There was also a side mystery going on, which was a fun twist at the end when it was solved. I enjoyed Piers and Charlotte and their banter.
"Love with the right person makes people stronger."
"The most dangerous weapon is the one that strikes closest to the heart."
"Scandal's like fire. It only burns so long as you give it fuel."

Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh. Ok so. Some years ago when I read Say Yes to the Marquess, the second book of the Castles Ever After series, I said in my review that I didn't really buy the romance between the two characters. That I couldn't understand how Clio chose Rafe over Piers, when I found the latter much more interesting (even if he only showed up for like the last five pages of the novel).
Well!
This is Piers' book! Which, interestingly enough functions as both the fourth Castles Ever After book and fifth Spindle Cove book. But back to Piers! I was totally right from the brief glimpse we got of him! He is such an interesting character. He's basically James Bond. Without the strings of women behind him of course. He is intense, and dark and brooding, but not overly, afraid of loving and being loved, until, of course, he meets our heroine, Charlotte.
I basically loved the romance between them. I really loved her too, which in turn made me love the two of the together so much more because she just gets him. Charlotte is fiery, and strong, and temperamental, and intelligent, and snarky, and funny, and really, she is just great. She definitely young, but she had such a maturity to her character and to the way she thought about things, and even to the way she wanted to seek and express her sexuality. She's basically my favourite kind of heroine! And Piers just falls for her, really, really hard. She sees the darkness that Piers has inside and she is not afraid to strip away all the walls he build around his heart, and that is just delightful to read. More than that, they're just on each other's teams, and it's really great (and not very often) when you come across two characters that get together and realize they love each other with minimal drama.
Ok, well, there was some drama, and honestly I expect to be annoyed with the unavoidable separation that always happens between lovers in historical romance book, but I it was great to discover that the drama was kept to a minimum.
Apart from the well done romance, the book was quite funny too. There were instance when I was laughing out loud. The supporting cast is great too, not to mention there's a mystery that moves the plot along, and it's pretty good. I didn't see the twist coming towards the end.
I haven't read any of the other Spindle Cove novels (I probably will after this), but I can definitely say that this book is my favourite of the Castles Ever After series! Pretty much perfect!
