I feel a little tricked about this one. I saw it listed as the fourth book in the Castles Ever After series, which I was having fun reading. But I did not see that it was also listed as part of the Spindle Cove series, which I never got into after DNF'ing the first book.

But this book clearly belonged in the Spindle Cove side of things, despite Piers being a side character in Castles. It felt like this was referencing people and events that I needed to know for Charlotte's background, and while I am now considering going back and picking up the books about her sisters, I'm still a little annoyed.

Also, Piers and Charlotte were fine, but it felt like there were barely any other people around at this supposedly full house party and it made the "mystery" plot extremely thin.

Embarrassed by her matchmaking mama, Charlotte tries to warn Lord Granville away. However, they are caught together and Piers proposes to save her reputation. Charlotte is determined to discover the identity of the mysterious lovers, who forced Piers to propose. Instead she discovers Piers' secrets and falls herself.

In the middle of this book I realized that I do this thing Charlottes does - I ask too many questions, I want to figure out why things happened, and I assume I'm successfully picking up on people's feelings.

The amateur detective, trying to sort out puzzles routine.

So that made it interesting for me to read.

6/10

The plot had a lot of twists, a couple that I genuinely didn't expect, and plenty of moments that made me laugh out loud. Piers is from a different Dare novel outside the Spindle Cove series, so I felt like I was missing some of his backstory and I think it kept me from appreciating his character. The mystery aspect of the story turned out to be pretty lame, but since Dare is a romance novelist, I'll let it slide.

Romance contender for 2024

Unbeknownst to me (until I popped over here to leave a review), apparently this is my second time reading this book. Still a 3 star, especially since I didn’t even remember reading it the first time. New low: achieved. 🙃😂

Loved Charlotte and Piers. Definitely a must read.
