This is a devastating read. There were moments when I gasped and had to put the book down for a while, but I am so grateful to have had this glimpse into the horrors, and the heroes, of our current day.

This book is told through conversations the author has with a total HERO of a man smuggling captured Yazidi women out of Daesh captivity. Through him, the author interviews women who have suffered terribly at the brutal hands of Daesh. The horrors they've had inflicted on them are truly unimaginable and heartbreaking.

The author should really be commended for telling the story of these heroic women and the man rescuing them. But, because the book is basically entirely phone conversations, and the stories told are interlinking but non-chronological, I found I got lost a bit. Probably more my fault as a reader, but there we go.

I sort of wish this was organized better with more explanation instead of it just being in interview format. The entirety of this was conversation.

Gripping, appalling, heartbreaking, you name it.

Five stars in that it's crucial reading. Three stars in that it's missing context -- it's sometimes in the first person, but we never really learn how Ms Mikhail knows Abdullah, how he does what he does, etc. So four overall.

To niedaleka przeszłość.
