8/17/2007: This book has one of the most boring and anticlimactic plot lines that I''ve ever read. It was only the plight of poor Defoe that kept me interested enough to finish reading it. An explanation of Imogen''s "issue" would have helped...as would some sort of intense moment, somewhere.

I really enjoyed the beginning, but I eventually lost my ability to believe in these characters. I think at certain points, he uses inexplicable behavior to show how we can't always understand other people, even when we love them. And in some instances, this works. But in other instances, it doesn't. For example, one character joins another on a trip, and to me there is no explanation other than the author needed someone to provide the p.o.v. from the remote location. I wanted to know how the book ended, so I eventually finished reading, but not because I was invested in the story.

Interesting premise, but the writing was very sparse. The first half and the second half felt like different books. I think it would have been better as a short story

I'm 90% sure I read this book but can not for the life of me remember what I thought of it. Clearly didn't love or hate it. Came across the title while reading reviews of The Bird Artist. Hmm....
