This was definitely the most frustrating of the series so far. While I understand the lack of trust between our characters, I am over the miscommunication at this stage. Honestly wanted more of our “side” characters than the main POVs featured in this book. Briar? Cyrus? Cassius? More please.
I know that Melissa didn’t do that to us, so suspending anger until we get him back in the next book.

Decimated. Absolutely decimated.

This was my favourite book so far in the series, but also the most frustrating at times. I can’t say much else without spoiling it. GAH.

“scarlett, i love you like the stars love the night. all the way through the darkness.”

this broke me, put me back together, and then broke me again. some of the betrayals cut soooo deep, and some decisions frustrated me, but i loved every second of it.

i ate up every single trope in this! the dual timelines / storylines really helped fuel the pacing and the plot, and i loved that you get even more pov’s in this!

SO much happens in this book! the stakes feel incredibly high in this not only because of what is going on plot wise, but also because over the first three books, melissa has been able to weave such a devoted bond between this group of characters. if you are a sucker for found family, i am begging you to pick this book up!!

💭 “we are a family. we choose each other. we claim each other. we challenge each other, push each other, listen to each other. but it only works because we trust each other. and when we do not do those things? that is when we break. that is when unnecessary tragedy is allowed to bloom.”

i have super complicated feelings towards talwyn’s storyline, but mostly my heart just hurts for her character. ashtine & briar?? i’m an absolute mess over these two in the best way. watching callan heal and come out of his scarlett trance made me really warm up to his character. lady tava?! “cunning little fox”?? i’m OBSESSED! and the fact that sorin got the lady of darkness herself to wear a pink dress?? 🥹💗

i’m excited to read cyrus’ bonus chapter after this, and then immediately jump into lady of embers. there are a couple fantasy books going viral right now, but nothing will stop me from continuing this series 🤣 especially after that ending?! i can’t imagine putting this down i am THOROUGHLY invested.

💭 “when she unleashes it, there will be nothing left but ashes in her wake”
