City of Eternal Night continues Kristen Painter's House of Comarre spin-off series.

Harlow is still in New Orleans having decided, after the horrific encounter with her father, to stay. She's been feeling this hollowness inside ever since her encounter with a vampire and she can't explain it. Things between her and Augustine are going well. Their attraction to one another is apparent on both sides, but they are both proceeding with caution. Harlow fears saying anything about the darkness inside her will turn Augustine away, but she really has no one else to turn to.

Augustine, as Guardian, is getting ready for the Fae Exemplar Krewe Ball. The Ball features a symbolic kidnapping of the Faery Queen. This time, however, the kidnapping proves to be the real thing and the ransom note that comes calls for Augustine's life in order to get the girl back safe and sound.

City of Eternal Night continued the story threads that were started in [b:House of the Rising Sun|18453118|House of the Rising Sun (Crescent City, #1)|Kristen Painter|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1390835803s/18453118.jpg|26098033]. I liked City better for the simple fact that I liked Harlow a lot better in this book. She's finally starting to come to terms with being Fae. Even with the unknown facts about her powers, she's still not turning her nose up, she wants to learn more about herself, and she's giving Augustine a chance. Right there is reason enough for me to like this book more.

Augustine has been attracted to Harlow from the first time he saw her, but with her aversion to all things Fae, she couldn't stand him. Now, they are working together more in order to bring the kidnapped girl home and it's nice to see that he's encouraging her help, but not pushing, and he's not keeping her secluded from any and all danger. I love his devotion to her and her growing

Of course being Kristen Painter there are a lot of twists and turns, the issues between the Fae and the witches is touched upon a lot but towards the end it gets overshadowed by finding the girl. There is a cliffhanger ending, but it's not as bad as I made it out in my head. While reading, everything points to the resolution coming in the next book, and I'm ok with that. I guess I can say I appreciate where Kristen Painter leaves off with the characters, thinking that she could have made things a whole lot worse for everyone in certain matters (trying not to be spoilery here).

Overall, I like this series better than it's originator. I think a lot of the things that bothered me about the House of Comarre series (such as too many POVs) are resolved here. I'm excited to see how things play out in the last book.

I found this really frustrating in places- Harlow seemed determined to make the worst decisions possible! The decisions were so obviously terrible and it was really predictable when it turned out badly- the whole thing was pretty predictable. The whole thing with the tree felt a lot like what happened with her father, she jumped right in without even considering for one second the other options or asking anyone else for advice, I was not surprised when it went badly. She'd been told that the price was always too high be but seemed to selectively forget that.

I'm also not really believing in Harlow and Augustine's relationship he seems nice but she's not been particularly interesting/nice/kind to him.

It also ended in a really annoying cliffhanger.

4 moons - City of Eternal Night by Kristen Painter Kristen Painter pulled in a lot of twists and turns in the second book in her Crescent City series. I was not expecting City of Eternal Night to lead up to that kind of ending and several moments of twists throughout the story. I think I'm still in shock over that ending. (Let me regroup for a minute)………………...

Things that I loved in City of Eternal Night:
I am in love with Augustine. There is no double about it, I am love with Augustine. He has changed in City of Eternal Night due to him becoming the guardian of the city. He has a lot of responsibility now and he also has changed from player boy to having his eyes on one certain person…Harlow. Although, in this book Auggie is hiding some major secrets from Harlow, so he not ready to admit his true feelings to Harlow until he can be more open. In fact, one of the secrets involves Harlow's mother. Harlow may not forgive him for his secret.
I loved the world building in this book due to how Kristen introduces more supernaturals into the story. These supernaturals all despise one another, especially the witches vs. Fae. The witches want to take over NOLA and they will do anything to gain that power. The witches have their own enemy they are dealing with in this book. The voodoo practitioners will do anything to prove they are not be messed with. It's a world-wind of crazy power happening in NOLA.
I did enjoy Harlow's character in the beginning of the book because she is opening up to being Fae now and she is more determined to learn how to fight for herself. Unfortunately, I had issues with her towards a certain incident she did. She did something very crazy and it left me in shock on why she would even trust this certain someone. Ugh!

The one thing that did bother me in City of Eternal Night was Harlow and her crazy irrational decision that I mentioned just a moment ago. Oh…Harlow, honey you should've just listened to Lally.  I was seriously in shock over her 360 decision she made without consulting someone else first. I thought it went to quick for her to make the decision. I also didn't like the certain someone she helped. Ugh! But I know, this character had to come forward in the story, I just wasn't too prepared for it to happen. I was hoping Harlow would get some help in the matter.
I'm a very curious on where Kristen Painter is going to take the story next because that cliffhanger was a shocker. I was not expecting this story to go the way it did. I enjoyed every bit of characterization and world-building in this book. I have no idea how Kristen Painter keeps up with all the details, but she is a master at it. She makes every one of her characters interesting and unforgettable. I'm still thinking about every one of the characters and that ending. I need to know what happens next.
I give this book 4 stars and highly recommend this book to Urban Fantasy readers out there. Readers that have read Kristen's House of Comarre will recognize some other characters to show up in City of Eternal Night.  =)

My review and an extended sample of the audiobook are posted at Hotlistens.com.

I really was excited to get this audiobook after finishing House of the Rising Sunearlier this year. I love the world that this series is set in. I love the fae characters, especially Augustine. They are different from some of the other fae books that I’ve read in the past. We continue to learn more about the fae in this world of New Orleans of the future. Because it is the future, there is some pretty nifty technology, including contacts that have facial recognition software.

When I listened to House of the Rising Sun, I really disliked Harlow. She was a selfish brat. While she is trying hard to be a better person in City of Eternal Night, I still had a hard time liking her in this book. She wants to help with the case that Augustine is working on, and I admire her for overcoming her fear of being fae and accepting her gifts. But she makes some really stupid decisions that are going to affect others around her. She is still very naive when it comes to the fae world, but does show promise. At least she wants to learn and come to terms with the fact that she is fae.

Augustine. *sigh* I just love him. Normally I tend to lean towards bad boys or the very alpha men, but with Augustine, he is just such a good guy. As guardian, he is always putting everyone else first. The only downside to this is he didn’t pay enough attention to Harlow. While the issues that had his attention were very important, Harlow, being new to the fae world, also needed his help. I think if he had be paying more attention to her, he might have been able to prevent some of Harlow’s bad decisions.

This series continues to deliver a unique world with intriguing characters. We also get to spend some time with the villains POV. That brought some really interesting aspects to the plot. We have many of the same characters from book one and some new ones that add a lot to the plot. We even get to see a little bit of Chrysabelle and Mal from House of Comarré series, but don’t worry if you haven’t read that series, this series is less spin off and more just set in the same world with a few cameo appearances. Slight warning about this book, it does end with a cliffhanger. Luckily, the next book, Garden of Dreams and Desires, comes out in April.

Narration
After listening to House of the Rising Sun, I knew what to expect with the narration for City of Eternal Night audiobook. While I don’t think Elijah Alexander will ever be one of my favorite narrators, I’m getting used to him for this series. He does like to do accents and they really don’t match the characters, but it does make each character very distinct.

His male and female voices are very distinct, though once again, the accents leave something to be desired. I always know which character is talking, which is really important to me. He has become the voices of these characters for me. This will be an audio only series for me with this narrator.

I like to thank Hachette Audio for providing me with a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

I really liked seeing Harlow coming out of her shell and accepting her fae side. Getting involved more in Augustine's investigations definitely helped her accept her gifts. Unfortunately she gets too comfortable with them and does something that is going to really complicate things. Augustine is going to have a hard time managing the personal problem that Harlow created as well as his job as Guardian.

Augustine really steps up to his position of Guardian and doesn't let the other members of the Electros who oppose him deter him from doing his job. For someone who was so against this position in book one, he's really gotten over that and is looking good in his leading position.

Giselle and Zara have gone WAY off course here, and have me wondering just what they are going to do now that they know the secret of the lightning tree. They went through so much in this book to really boost their powers, I am worried about what they are capable of. I really feel like Giselle is way too power hungry and with no one to keep her in place, she is going to go wild. The team she is pulling together and the power structure they are building is really going to make the witches a force to be reckoned with.

I found that I didn't get deep into City of Eternal Night. We bounced around issues with Harlow, the witches, Branzino and Rue so much I wasn't able to settle down into the main plot. There may have been some kind of link between them all, but I think I missed it. The ending pretty much just dropped off one storyline and introduced another. That makes me interested enough to read the next book. We're pretty much left with two big storylines and I hope we stick to that so I don't get a lot of stuff muddled up.This review was originally posted on Rantings of a Reading Addict

So this took... a week? to read.
Yeah, I know.. There are several reasons for that. First and foremost, RL getting in the way. But also and sadly it took me a while to get into this.
It started really slow. Nothing wrong with that either. I just wasn't in the mood for slow and intense.
And mentioning intense...If I would have one word to describe this, that would be it.
I think Painter is a master with intense actually. The slow build up of Augies and Harlow's relationship, the dramas and disasters slowly sprinkled through the plot, the incredible descriptions, the world building, the action, the feels... it all is immensely intense. This is not a light anything.

Painters prose is beautiful and she has my heart wrapped around her pen. She is one of the most skilful urban fantasy authors I've ever read.

The world building is amazing. I loved it in City of the Rising Sun, I haven't read House of Comarré , her first series set in the same world, so all of it was new to me. In this instalment Painter added more details and managed to astound me again. I've never been in NOLA but after reading this... I wanna go, really really wanna go. Need to see exactly how Painter took the exciting place, it's feel and character and added her own brand to it. I wanna know exactly how much, how precise.. I wanna see the place that inspired this world.

The story line as I said is at time a bit slow. A slow but steady buildup till the end. There is not as much action as in the first book- I think I kinda missed that- but there is plenty of twists and turns. Some of them, had me totally sidetracked and others I saw coming and was dreading. I kept on oscillating between hoping that it would work out and waiting for the shoe to drop...right till the last word. Which by the way had me wanting to throw my kindle on the wall. I mean I gotta wait till what? APRIL?!! So frustrating! really really frustrating. And if you wondering. It's a cliffy alright. I mean it's not but yeah it is. See still oscillating!

The best part though by far? The character building. It is meticulous. Not a single flat or one-sided character. Each one is interesting, there are several POV, in fact quite a lot of them, but because Painter writes in third person and does an astounding job at it, it adds to the character building. The exact time a POV is chosen, the way they were written- they all unique to the different characters, not once was I confused or lost- all add to the character building. This is not a small cast. There are several new additions in this book, several new kind of fae and magic creatures. Painter managed to bring them across masterfully, I feel like I know them all, some of them I am hoping to get to know better.
Augie and Harlow being the two MCs, one gets to know them best. And I like them, bot , with faults and all. Both of them change and evolve throughout the two books, but stay uniquely themselves at the same time. And their relationship? Slow burn... no insta..Which makes me a happy girl. I did at times wish they would finally get it on. But then again, there is a realness to it, their friendship being deepened and their respect for each other grows slowly. Theirs is a companionship with a promise of more way more. So I can wait.

I was left with so many questions. So so so many. And to be honest I was not really satisfied with the answers that City of Eternal Night gave me. In fact, not much was resolved. A couple of deaths.. that's about it.
There are so many stories woven together, so many still to be told, I can't wait to see how Painter unravels them!

So. April. *takes a deep breath* I guess I could always start reading House of Comarré so long...

In this book, Harlow learns why her evil father wants his house. He will do anything to get it and when he kidnaps a teenage fae girl, it is up to Augustine and Harlow to save her. There is action from the witch sector of the city as well and Augustine suspects that all the problems are connected. Action, romance and fantasy fill this second book in the trilogy.
