i had always wondered why this book was so controversial, when all it really did was air tales about womanhood that are so commonplace but are so rarely discussed out in the open — seeing how it made a lot of men mad, i’d say it did its part of exposing all of the things that they took for granted as a consequence of women always having it harder.

what makes kim jiyoung extraordinary is the fact that she is ordinary — that because she is the representation of every single woman in the world, you can supplant any of her experiences with something similar to yours and you will feel seen. at every moment of jiyoung’s life, i’ve been her. i’ve also been her older sister eunyoung, her friend seungyeon... and i fully expect that when i start working or god forbid get married or become a mother, so many of the events that transpired will one day ring true for me as well.

every single woman in this book has been me or another girl that i know. in the words of the author herself, “jiyoung became different people from time to time. some of them were living, others were dead, all of them women she knew. truly, flawlessly, completely, she became that person.” there’s something comforting but also disturbing in that tragic fact, that the relegation of women as the lesser sex is so universal, but i’m glad that instead of it being just an open secret, this time around we are resisting.

truthfully, whether we restrain ourselves or not, people will always have something to say regardless. so just like misook told jiyoung, i hope we can run wild — which is genuinely the largest act of defiance that we can make against a world that is so determined to put us down.

★★★★ ─── 4 stars read.

giving less than 4 stars to such a statement that is this book would not be fair, for all women that were depicted in the narration, and the author herself.
