Female characters who have full backbones  are folded inwards by societal issues.
Job inequality. Victim blaming. Chore imbalance at home. Maternity leave inequality. Uniform inequality. Smart women 'taxing'. Natural expectation that men should be prioritised and should go first and any opportunity given to women is a favour to them or something to be praised. How to deal with sexual harassment in interview (quesrion on how the candidate will deal with sexual harassment). Strong backbone mother with practical understanding of how life should be and have infinite financial knowledge and management skills yet men get the praise still. Men don't take on household tasks nor are the try hards while women are. Women are expected to chose between being a mother or a worker. They have to be the man in the team to progress or remain within their workplace. When working have to deal with disgusting commentary and demeaning humour. Work life balance if fat yikes within workplace. Management makes it difficult for women to remain or progress by any means. Gender pay gap. Children taking father's name. Inequality even pregnancy. Seen as if she is fully normal.  Worm lose everything to be a mother yet men lose nothing.  Natural choice for who will be the stay at home parent is woman. Men think it's wholly women's responsibility to be mothers and home keepers that they think any responsibility they have is 'helping' their wife. Trauma in birth. Work quality diminishes for women after child. <\spoiler>

Goodreads describes this book as "The runaway bestseller that helped launch Korea's new feminist movement, Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982 follows one woman's psychic deterioration in the face of rigid misogyny." I cannot think of a better description. This book is short, but it packs a punch. It had me angry from beginning to end. There are heavy themes of misogyny throughout the whole book as our main character, Jiyoung, simply cannot catch a break. The narrative of her life, while brief, illustrates perfectly how living under an oppressive patriarchy in Korean culture has messed with this woman's mental health and development. Though this book is specifically about a typical woman from modern day South Korea, I think there are things that happen within it that most women from various cultures can relate to, which horrifies me. I don't feel like I'm super qualified to review a book this important. I'm just a girl who likes books, but I really liked this book and what it had to say about feminism, motherhood, and being an average woman in general. The only thing I think I would change would be that I would've liked it to be longer and to have gone deeper into the psychological aspect of it.

The book captures the essence of feminism in its simplest form— all while narrating the sensitive phases of a woman’s life meaningfully. The writing provides readers an accessible range of social movements and ideologies.

I liked how the flow of the storyline was written in a comfortable pace. The book covers the journey of womanhood. In the position of the second gender, you’re taken through situations of an overwhelming sense that leave you feeling helpless.

It felt as though the end of the book was rushed but I have no other complaints. This book is a great eye opener and conversation starter for readers of all ages (given that they’re aware of the trigger warnings.) The theme allows people to look at the world not as it is, but how it could be.

It was a little hard to get into in the very beginning, but once I got into it, it was a very powerful story.
