Fabbio left his hometown of Ruffano after his brother died in the war. Now he is a tour guide, and while in Rome he sees a homeless woman who seems familiar to him. The next morning she is dead and he leaves his job to go back home and find out the truth about what happened.

Still a four star, but my least favourite Du Maurier by far. I really like how the reveals suddenly slot into place but make total sense (I worked out a couple a little bit before they happened but not too quickly). It also really did feel like a small Italian town. The main issue was the sexism written into the character and the world generally, which was probably fairly realistic for the time but it made the experience of reading it unpleasant and none of Du Maurier’s other works had this kind of misogynistic main character in them, even those set centuries earlier than Flight of the Falcon.
