UK Washington and Tilly. I hope they are the whole series!
“There were only a few years between them, but in terms of life experiences there were decades. Her naivety and innocence contrasted sharply with his own dark nature, but in many ways they were alike; they were both obsessives, and they both rubbed people up the wrong way.”

I chose this book after lots of recommendations on how good a book it was – and they were all right. This was a great police procedural that had me gripped from beginning to end. It follows Washington Poe (what a great name for a main character) and Tilly Bradshaw as they try to catch a serial killer burning victims in the Lake District’s stone circles.
Washington Poe is such an intriguing character, living in Cumbria after being suspended from the National Crime Agency he is brought into the case of a serial killer – The Immolation Man after his name was found carved on the charred remains of the latest victim. DI Stephanie Flynn who replaced him asks him to become involved in the case and he ends up working with her and SCAS crime analyst Tilly Bradshaw. Poe likes to do what he thinks is best, he is relentless and often goes rogue to hunt down the evidence he needs to catch this killer. Intuition drives him on and with Tilly who is super skilled, yet so sheltered is soon using her analytical skills to help him solve the crimes. He has a protectiveness over Tilly and I enjoyed the development in their relationship throughout the book. They work so well together and soon they are uncovering all sorts of secrets and evidence and appear unstoppable in their desire to find out what has been going on.
There was not a huge cast of characters in this book and although I did have a fleeting guess at who the killer was I did not foresee what was going to happen next. There were some tender parts of this book, a killer's life is laid bare, and it is not easy reading. I thought the setting was brilliantly described, the wildness and beauty of the area clear on the pages. A great plot and well-paced action and a few twists in there which I didn’t see coming and this only added to my enjoyment of the book.
This is the first of a series and I am excited to see what the author does with Poe and Bradshaw – they are an unstoppable force and one which I won't forget for a while.
5 star read from me. Great work on two exciting main characters !!!!

This book is fast paced and being told by the main character’s point pf view set in the current time.
This is a dark murder mystery detective investigation kinda story— which usually is not my go-to trope. I tend to enjoy less detective-driven story as most of these books i’ve read only got at most 3-stars from me. But this one? When i reached the revelation part, i got this excitedly confused reaction thinking that “am i the puppet for this show (in refer to the book title)? Because i felt like i was played”. The most intense and gripping plot would definitely be the part where i found out who the killer is. It shocked me to the core. The twist is so clever and satisfying!! I don’t know if i just closed my eyes on the hints or i was just plain dumb, but that reveal caught me off guard

Excellent! I loved it! Now I have another author and series to be obsessed over. Moving on to the next one.
Pros: The police procedural aspect of this was well done.
I liked Poe, Bradshaw, and Flynn
I liked the setting in Cumbria
Cons: The crimes being investigated and the events that motivated the crimes were horrific. I didn't need to read about that.

Great debut
This is great first book. I highly recommend. It's so well written and the main characters are very likeable. Near the end of was easy to figure out the killer but I still wanted to finish it

This was actually a really decent police procedural. The writing was good and the case was complex. The only reason I gave it 3 stars is because police procedurals are personally not my favorite so I found myself loosing interest a bit. But if you enjoy them over thrillers, you’ll like this one. Also it touches a few triggering topics so make sure you do your research before reading!
Start of a great series
This was a great story. I loved the two main characters Washington and Tilly, two opposite that fit well together. I loved how the character of Tilly grew throughout the book. The storyline got you involved from the start and you wanted to read more. Can’t wait for the next book!
