This was such a great read. I loved it from beginning to end and was conflicted because I wanted to get to the end and discover the resolution but at the same time it was so good I almost didn't want it to end. I want Tilly as a new best friend. She's so adorable and awkward but at the same time strong, just what Poe needs. Washington Poe is just the perfect character, well developed throughout but still with his secrets and mysteries. I want more Poe... I need more Poe. Please don't make me wait too long for the continuation of his story

After a week of trying to sit down with this book and only getting to the half way mark I had to DNF.
Whilst the plot seemed okay, I just couldn’t get hooked into the story and even with short chapters it felt like it was dragging out. The characters felt very cliche for me which perhaps didn’t help but something about the writing style just wasn’t working for me.
Sadly I think M.W Craven just isn’t the right author for me but can see why other might enjoy it.

I am a huge fan of detective fiction but since they all come in a series, I was not actively looking for a new one to add to my list. I’m struggling to read the ones already in my TBR as it is. However, I was thrilled to find this copy at BX and even more thankful to Kuhanesh for speaking of this series highly, after we traded stories and shared our excitement for Lars Kepler’s Detective Joona Linna series.
The premise of the book was enough to draw me in. A body was found being burned to crisp in a stone circle, rendering it a spookier feel as if it was some sort of a ritual than just random killing. Only after a few more bodies were found - all burned and mutilated - was Poe, a disgraced detective, was called in to assist with the investigation. What’s more, all of the bodies were found in Lake District’s prehistoric stone circles. The police were reluctant to bring back Poe, but on the third body were slashes that bore his name – either he was the serial killer leaving his signature, or he was the murderer’s next victim.
The case was not only interesting, I love that Craven answered all the questions I had – about the case in general, why Poe was named after two prominent figures, and his tragic past. Overall, the case was tied up beautifully, there were no loose ends so this could be read as a standalone. But would I still want to continue with the series? Hell yeah! I was super glad to know that there are at least four more books already in print that I can look forward to.
For me, the best part about the book was not only the case, but the characters! Although I love Jo Nesbo’s Inspector Harry Hole, he does reckless things that can get on people’s nerves sometimes. Lars Kepler’s Detective Joona Linna is a more dependable character, but the cases are very life-like that he sometimes took a back seat when I wished he could do more. Inspector Washington Poe, and his sidekick, Tilly Bradshaw on the other hand, are the unlikely pair I didn’t know I need! Tilly’s endearing character and Poe’s protectiveness over her are some of the best parts in the book in my opinion. I can’t wait to get into the second book, just so I can witness their camaraderie and how well they work together to solve the cases. Highly recommended!
