এই বইটা আসলে আমার পড়া প্রথম ক্রাইম নভেল। আর তার জন্যে আমার মনে হয় আমি নিজের জন্য স্ট্যান্ডার্ড অনেক বেশি উচু করে করে ফেলেছি।
সারসংক্ষেপ: ইংল্যান্ডে নরকীয় হত্যাযজ্ঞ চালিয়ে যাচ্ছে কিছু স্টন সার্কেলে এক নতুন সিরিয়াল কিলার। সংবাদমাধ্যম তার নাম দিয়েছে বলিমানব। কে সে? কী তার মোটিভ? তার পরবর্তী শিকার কোন লোকটা? পুলিশ নিরুত্তর। ক্লু পাওয়া গেল, যখন টিলি ব্র্যাডশ’ নামের এক মেয়ে বলিমানবের এক শিকারের বুকে আবিষ্কার করল বিশেষ একটা নাম। ওয়াশিংটন পো। বরখাস্ত করা হয়েছিল পুলিশের এই ডিটেকটিভকে, কিন্তু ফিরিয়ে আনতে বাধ্য হলেন বড় কর্তারাই। ওর বিশেষত্ব: সিরিয়াল কিলিং। ব্র্যাডশ’কে সঙ্গে নিয়ে প্রায় অসম্ভব এক কেসের দায়িত্ব কাঁধে নিল সে। সময় কি ফুরিয়ে যাচ্ছে? বলিমানবের মুখোশ উন্মোচনের আগে তার শেষ শিকারে পরিণত হবে পো নিজেই? যদি তা না হয়, ওর নাম কেন বিশেষ এক কায়দায় উল্লেখ করল ভয়ঙ্কর সেই খুনি? কেন ওর ক্রম বলে দেয়া হলো ৫?

সত্যি কথা বলতে আমি ভাবিনি আমি বইটা এত পছন্দ করবো। সিরিয়াল কিলিং জনরাটা আমার সবসময় মনে হয়েছে যে এটা আমার জন্য না। তবে এই বইটা আমার ধারণা উল্টে দিয়েছে। এখানে চরিত্রগুলো অনেক ভালোভাবে লেখা হয়েছে। বইয়ে ভ্যান জিল নামে একটা চরিত্র আছে যার প্রত্যেকটা সিন একসাথে যোগ করলে মনে হয় ১০ পেজও হবে না। অথচ সে আমার কাছে গল্পের অন্যতম এবং জরুরি চরিত্র। তবে গল্পের মূল চরিত্রটাও কম নয়। তবে আমার মতে এই গল্পের সেরা চরিত্র হচ্ছে বলিমানব এর কারনটা জানতে হলে আপনাকে বইটা নিজেই পরতে হবে।
বইয়ে কোনো অপ্রয়োজনীয় অংশ নেই। প্রতিটা ঘটনা আমাদের মিস্টেরিটা সলভ করতে সাহায্য করবে। এখানে আসল মিস্টারিটা এমন যে, যখন আমি সবকিছুর উত্তর পাই আমি নিজেই অবাক কারণ আমি চাইলেই এই সমাধানে আসতে পারতাম। এমন নয় যে, লেখক শেষ মুহূর্তে বলিমানবকে ধরার জন্য নতুন তথ্য বের করে যেগুলো আমাদের জানা ছিল না। সব তথ্য গল্পতে একটু একটু করে ছিটকানো আছে।
আর গল্পের সেরা অংশ বলতে গেলে বলতে হবে এর এন্ডিং। এন্ডিংটা ছিল অনেক ইমোশনাল। এত অস্বাভাবিক আর অসাধারণভাবে গল্পটা শেষ হয়েছে যে আমি শুধু চাই যে আরো লোক বইটা পড়ুক আর বইটা একটা বড় আলোচনার বিষয় হোক। আমার মনে হয় যারা এই জনরাতে দক্ষ তাদের জন্য মাস্ট রিড আর যারা এই জনরাতে বই পরে না তাদেরকে আমি অনুরোধ করবো এই বইটাকে একবারের জন্য হলেও ট্রাই করতে।

En otäck historia, som startade på grund av en ännu otäckare historia, med en inte alldeles oväntad upplösning. Lite seg men Washington Poe och Tilly Bradshaw utgör ett intressant par som ger mig anledning att förmodligen läsa nästa bok.

Oh, where do I even begin? This book is a masterpiece that left me enthralled from start to finish. I was always on the edge of my seat, eagerly flipping my iPad pages as I became immersed in its dark and twisted world.
Just like ‘Fearless’, M.W. Craven’s latest release, I didn’t find myself skim reading at all. Every word mattered.
The story revolves around Detective Sergeant Washington Poe, a brilliant yet unconventional investigator with a haunted past. When a series of gruesome murders begins, Poe finds himself entangled in the investigation.
The character development is exceptional. Washington Poe is a flawed and deeply compelling protagonist, and his partnership with the brilliant analyst, Tilly Bradshaw, adds a unique dynamic to the story. The banter between these two characters had me laughing, and I really adore both of them.
There are lots of twists and turns, and just when I thought I had it all figured out, there would be another curveball.
I cannot recommend this book enough to fans of the crime and thriller genres. If you're looking for a dark and gripping page-turner, The Puppet Show is an absolute must-read.

I wanted to start a new police procedural in 2023 and Washington Poe's series seems the exact one for me. I LOVE when they explain why the title is the title. I guessed the murderer and that's why I can't give this book 5* but I did really enjoy it.
I'd have read it faster but OFSTED came... and ruined my week. I'm still exhausted!

I wanted to turn him onto something fresh – and found it in a Waterstones newsletter! Yay for bookseller publicity tools! I ordered the first three Washington Poe books from the UK. Once they arrived, he INHALED them and forwarded them to me saying “You must read these. You’ll love Tilly.” Bonus Dad was right … Tilly ROCKS!
From her initial appearance in the investigation room, I loved Tilly’s social awkwardness and genius analysis. With each new reveal of her character, I just fell for her harder and harder, ready to start a Tilly Bradshaw Fan Club. And I’ve only read the first book!
Oh, yeah, and there was a serial killer mystery to solve with a moody detective sergeant who wants to run investigations his-way-or-the-highway. Washington Poe leads with his gut – and it can lead him to some harebrained theories. To me, the best murder mysteries are the ones that, at the big reveal, make me go “say what? Huh? Shoot … now I have to go back and check …” This was one of those books. I did indeed page back to a couple of spots in the early text and do quick re-reads. It was a wowser of a finale.
And, I’m very glad Bonus Dad shared all three of the books with me – and excited to see a fourth is on the way in June. I just may have found myself addicted to a police procedural series!

Three stars may not seem very good but I actually enjoyed reading it quite a lot. It was just a bit straightforward for the first two thirds of the book. It really started picking up after that though and I surprised myself at the end and wanted to go straight into the second one.
