God, fine, okay, Suzanne Collins did it again. I do think unfortunately the setting and concept is so good for a YA novel that she could write every single Hunger Games from #1 to Katniss' and they would all be fun. It pulls you through exactly the same way the first Hunger Games novel did. Unfortunately the ending is pre-determined and so fucking sad, so you get to the end feeling like you expect a semi-triumphant ending somewhat like the Hunger Games and it's actually just sad. So that's probably the biggest downer. However it is kind of unavoidable in the premise of the book so. You win some, you lose some, at least Suzanne Collins isn't funding a transphobic empire with her ill-gotten gains.

This was as heartbreaking as I was expecting it to be. It was honestly a tough read, and it made me ache all the more for everyone experiencing the horrors of the world right now. It made me ache, but it also enraged me, because the Capitol doesn’t feel like such a far-flung fiction these days.

It’s hard to recapture the magic of the original. But this certainly adds nuance and is engaging the way through. There are a number surprises, and clever tie-ins to the original series.

It was impressive how Collins twisted elements around, like the reaping. And that Haymitch was in on the rebel cause since the jump. text

And I thought the first four Hunger Games books were devestating. They absolutely have nothing on this. I fear for the movie, as I doubt it can truly capture the horror and heartbreak Haymitch endures. There is no teenage love story in this arena, just a boy trying to survive as literal children are slaughtered. That is a fact the earlier books and movies let slide a little, with the older protagonists who keep to themselves. But Haymitch's attachment to the younger competetors refuses to let you look away or romanticize the slaughter.
