Onze jonge held Moomintroll ontwaakt midden in zijn winterslaap en maakt zo als enige Moomin (de rest ligt nog in diepe coma) het hem onbekende winterleven mee. Eerst is dit nog eng, donker en koud, maar hij leert nieuwe vrienden kennen, die hem de geneugten van de winter laten zien (o.a. de einzelgänger Too-Ticky en de al te aanwezige, overenthousiaste Hemulen) en langzaam leert hij de winter waarderen.
In dit deel woont Moomin onmiskenbaar in een Noorderlijk land. In de eerste dagen komt de zon zelfs niet op (wat betekent dat Moomin boven de poolcirkel woont) en alle winterbeschrijvingen met zijn enorme hoeveelheden sneeuw en ijs zijn typisch Skandinavisch.
Janssons stijl is hoogst origineel met poëtische beschrijvingen van haar unieke, meerlagige en moeilijk vatbare karakters en met de typische vanzelfsprekendheid van bijv. onzichtbare wezens en de afwezigheid van 'het kwaad'. Ze laat zelfs ongegeneerd een vrolijke eekhoorn sterven.

Normally, the Moomins hibernate, but this winter Moomintroll awakes, alone and miserable.
'Moominland Midwinter' places the Moominvalley undeniably within the arctic circle, as it describes a winter in which the sun for some period of time isn't visible, at all. The gloom of this winter reflects Moomintroll's melancholic mood. This book is another major step in the evolution of Jansson's writing style towards a more introspective, poetic one. Many pages are devoted to Moomintroll's feelings of loneliness and nostalgia. He even rages against the winter. But as the book progresses Moomintroll learns to accept his fate, and to live in the now, not in the past or the future.
Apart from Moomintroll some pages are devoted to the small stories of the little dog Sorry-Oo, who longs to live with the wolves, and Salome the little creep, who's secretly in love with the thick Hemulen. In fact, surprisingly many page are devoted to relationships between characters and their inner development, while "real" adventures are absent.
In all, 'Moominland Midwinter' is a beautiful portrait of winter and of the more difficult times in life, in general.

Alltså wow. Hur fantastiskt var inte detta? Förstår verkligen inte hur jag har klarat mig i 21 år utan att ha läst Mumin. Men nu är min första muminbok avklarad och jag längtar sannerligen efter att få läsa fler. Boken är skriven med ett så vackert språk och karaktärerna är helt underbara. Tove Jansson beskriver naturen på ett så poetiskt men ändå äkta sätt att jag tror att det är jag, och inte Mumintrollet, som upplever vintern för första gången. Den här boken fick mig att må så bra. Åh.
